The first snow... finally!

Author: Markus Böheim

It doesn’t have to be summer, spring or autumn for you to experience an unforgettable hike.

Finally - the first snow, something we have eagerly been waiting for. And as we have seen, the cold season is perfect for hikers.

Right now, during the time of the first snowfall, a romantic hike can be a welcome thing to do. Here in Bad Kleinkirchheim we have lots of possibilities for walks in winter. I would like to present my favorite one to you. It’s important to start off early though – you’ll want to be able to enjoy the sun. Starting point is the post-office of Bad Kleinkirchheim.

We start off walking on the tarmac street towards Gasthof Ploniger (those who leave late can enjoy the guesthouse’s view with some wine and a scrumptious meal), and then move on to the forest road. After about 200 meters we get to a wayside cross, we keep to our left and walk towards Totelitzen. The higher up we get, the dreamier we woods become. It’s kind of like in a Winter-Wonder-World.

The sun and snow have both casted lovely silvery woods. Because Christmas is near, old memories arise in us; about the times when we would go into the woods to follow animal tracks. Shhh…be quiet… very quiet – two deer are crossing the path! We’re amazed, watching these withdrawn animals from so close! Due to all this dreaming, time flies by and we’re already on the highest point of our hike.

The Schafalm, which is below Totelitzen, is also the wayside cross to Zirkitzen.  We just go a bit farther to the next shelter to change our clothes, get our snacks out and enjoy the view to the Kaiserburg.

It’s just as if reality left us. It’s perfect here for dreaming - a real treat for the mind and body. With a heavy heart the journey leads us back down. We follow the marked trail towards Zirkitzen and after 45 minutes we reach the guesthouse Raunig, where we end our journey with some red wine and a beautiful view. The time passes way too quickly and so we take our things and follow the trail all the way back to Bad Kleinkirchheim to the initial point, the post-office. The total hiking time depends naturally on your walking speed. It takes us around 3-4 hours, seeing as you should have fun doing it.
