History of Bad Kleinkirchheim in the Nockberge Mountain region of Austria
Bad Kleinkirchheim – an Alpine spa since 500 BC

Health and wellbeing have played an important role in the history of Bad Kleinkirchheim since ancient times: the treasures of the Alps such as healing thermal springs and the precious Alpine valerian plant brought people to the heart of the Austrian Alps from the dawn of history.
Your friendly spa resort was not yet founded in the times of the Romans. But Caesar’s lover, the beautiful Cleopatra, imported some of her beauty products from the Nockberge Mountain region. Alpine valerian was extremely popular in the countries of the Orient. Documents exist that prove a lively trade of the precious plant as early as 500 BC. As someone who was very intimate with the secrets of beauty, Cleopatra was (unsurprisingly) unwilling to forgo the beneficial effects of Alpine valerian. The first settlement of the region surrounding Bad Kleinkirchheim of today occurred after the collapse of the Roman Empire. The first settlers from Bavaria and Franconia came to Carinthia in the 8th century.
